The sea turtles are highly migratory animal. They spend every stage of their lives in different regions of the oceans. They are, therefore, natural resources of responsibility of more than one nation. Five of the seven species existing in the world occur in Brazil.
Projeto TAMAR has consolidated specific actions in the sea turtles reproduction and feeding areas, protecting the females, considering the creation of parks and reserves, educating and looking for economical alternatives for the communities located on the beaches frequented by these animals.
With the satellite tracking, TAMAR seek to get information about the geographical areas where these animals spend the other moments of their life cycle, when they aren’t nesting. To know, for example, if they are protected in these places and during their locomotion. Whether they are in Brazil or traveling to territorial waters of other countries.
These information allow us to establish guidelines and priorities for the conservation works. If they migrate to other countries, international protection actions will be necessary. If they are in Brazil, TAMAR will be responsible for intensifying the efforts to increase the work areas, to adjust the fishing activities, besides looking for less predatory technologies and suggesting new areas of protection.
